MeCS-Kol: Medical & Clinician Scientist Kolleg

Outpatient and cross-sector care for people with disabilities and chronic illnesses

Patients with chronic diseases, impairments, and multimorbidity have complex and multifaceted requirements, specific needs, and living circumstances that are associated with specific healthcare requirements. In addition, an ever-increasing number of people are affected by chronic diseases, partly due to rising life expectancy. The changing age structure is affecting the development of diseases and posing challenges for the healthcare system. The trend toward more outpatient care instead of inpatient care due to a shortage of skilled workers also poses challenges for medical care. Against the backdrop of these challenges, the OWL Medical Faculty is dedicating itself to researching and improving care for people with disabilities and chronic illnesses in the BMBF third-party funded project MeCS-Kol, led by Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Claudia Hornberg.

As part of this project, partners from various working groups and clinics at the OWL Medical Faculty will work on four subprojects. These subprojects aim to research, develop, test, and evaluate target group-specific challenges, innovative solutions, and teaching and training programs for healthcare professionals to meet the needs of and deal with people with disabilities and chronic illnesses. The Digital Medicine working group is involved in the subproject dedicated to the development, testing, and evaluation of these teaching and training programs. In collaboration with the Department of Studies and Teaching at the OWL Medical Faculty, it will design a digital learning platform through which the teaching and training programs will be delivered.

The MeCS-Kol project is managed by the German Aerospace Center (DLR). The project will run for 48 months (October 2024-October 2028), with work on the subprojects beginning in summer 2025.
